The projectors call and respond in a chaotic and restless dialogue, firing interlocking shapes and gradually becoming more complex. The repetition of the projected image through the screens transforms flat impressions, enlarging and giving the sense of physical volume within the exhibition space. Reflex is an experiment in the medium of dual-projection, spatialising light itself; the immaterial presented as material. The installation is a simple apparatus, yet allows scope for complexity in effect. The interchangeable pace at which the spectrum of colours crossfade between the projectors creates the sense of a parallel timescape; time slowed down. 08/12/12 +-0 Postbahnhof Berlin Orbit is a kinetic light installation designed for a former railway tunnel. A series of rotors of increasing diameter and speed are positioned along the 80m space, projecting laser beams into the void. Their orbiting constellation targets towards a circular plane at the end of the tunnel. The viewer follows the rays overhead, approaching the swirling red cells emanating from the vanishing point. The churning rumble of the revolving cogs reveals a machine in perpetual motion. Orbit premiered as part of a curated art and club event in Berlin in November 2012. The first, Panoptic, is a physical mobile-installation situated in Courtyard IV of the former Kantstraße Women’s Prison, exploring visual space. The installation is an instrument for observation, a device through which the ocular perception of the prison is altered. The project explores the notion of panoptics, a term derived from the philosophical and architectural concept of the panopticon, first conceived by Jeremy Bentham during the Age of Englightenment, a spatial paradigm through which society can be observed and controlled. The project investigates the correlation between voyeurism and architectural space and how panoptic-based architecture can influence our pathological state and consciousness. Michel Foucault’s mechanism of panopticism, takes the concept further as a symbol for modern disciplinary society: “The Panopticon is an ideal architectural figure of modern disciplinary power. The Panopticon creates a consciousness of permanent visibility as a form of power, where no bars, chains, and heavy locks are necessary for domination any more.” Excerpt from Discipline & Punish; The Birth of the Prison, Michel Foucault The disused prison is situated within the former incarcerated island of West Berlin, concealed behind the high Altbau facades of Kantstraße. The prison is hidden both physically and psychologically, away from the public consciousness. Passing the threshold from the familiar realm of the current to this secluded place, dilapidated, dormant and frozen in time, one is engulfed by the prison’s spirit. In the manner of inmates, the processional sequences of Höfe lead to the final grand courtyard where the installation is revealed. Pendant in mid-air, held tort between the high red brick planes of the prison, Panoptic demarcates the state of arrival. The installation establishes a vantage point from which the viewer observes an abstracted and constantly evolving image of the courtyard’s facade, peering into the prison cells. The installation engages forms of expression, a critical and active dialogue between artist, artwork and the viewer. Open to interpretation, Panoptic’s veritable meaning and associations could be viewed as follows: on one hand, the installation could be seen as an optical experiment, an interface between the earth and sky. However, from a phenomenological standpoint and with a sensibility towards the historical mode and context of the prison in mind, the installation could be viewed as the representation of the hierarchical relationship between guard and prisoner, blurring the distinction between the detained and unbound. The viewfinder, suspended over the bed, is evocative of a sarcophagus. The pyramidal faceted form rises to meet the vertical line of sight with an oculus, narrowing the field of vision and obscuring the peripheral. In plan, the viewfinder shares the exact footprint of a prison cell conveying its scale (L 3450mm x W 1670mm x H 3000mm). The volumetric juxtaposition of the bed and viewfinder further suggests the spatial configuration of a cell. Suspended above the viewfinder, three reflective discs are scaled according to the vertical perspective of the viewer beneath. The overall image the viewer observes is conceived so that each reflected surface is equal in surface area, in spite of distance. The discs rotate independently on horizontal axes generating the impression of multiple directions of movement. The immateriality of mirror and its shifting reflections focus on effects rather than substance, collapsing the physical planes of the prison, dissolving from view. The framed perspective encircled by the oculus mimics a cell window. The view could be representative not of hope or objective emancipation, but of hermetic entrapment. The kaleidoscopic image of the prison is in constant movement, providing no visual escape for the eye. Entering the exhibition, the audience pass through a threshold of sound, signalling the physical transition from the familiar realm we inhabit into an alternative temporal experience. Designed in the round, the installation draws one’s attention towards the centrepiece, illustrating the start of a ritualistic collective event. Light and sound are both considered immaterial, void of mass. However, from a phenomenological perspective, our perception of these mediums through our senses can be considered material in character. Light, in this manner, not only reveals the space and the beauty of the clay sculptures, but reveals light itself as a material presence in space. The architectural interior is revealed through light and its spatial volume through the manipulation of sound. The sound score consists of generated and natural sounds, radiating from the central pavilion, creating a complex and ever-evolving polyphony enveloping the audience within the space. The fusion of these sounds is symbolic of the restorative concept of La Cura; a diverse soundscape composed to the time of the performance, evokes a new beginning, portraying sonic imagery from dystopia to moments of euphoria. The cylindrically-shaped volume of the Conte Biancamano acts as a reverberant chamber, phasing, focusing and blending the projected sounds to create a sonic cocoon. The resultant soundscape is heard primarily through reverberation and abstraction via the room’s innate acoustics. Peripherally, the undulating resin-coated drape performs both as an acoustic and visual boundary encircling and enclosing the audience. Sounds that are echoed from beyond this visual perimeter of the performance space and the enveloping drapes, bestow the sense of an external environment beyond that which is immediately seen. In essence, these reflected sounds produce the perception that the space extends outside the physical boundaries of the installation; that this ritualistic vision produced within is part of a wider context. The parabolic reflector, raw, metallic and primal in shape, expresses a rebirth of design concepts. Its inner face, uniform and unblemished, scatters a diffuse and cleansing white light onto the surface of the pavilion. This glowing core of light peaks and fades in response to the shifting soundscape, thus, coalescing as a combined visual and auditory environment towards the pulse of a parallel time-scape. Illuminated by the parabolic reflector, the newly-born clay forms created by the audience take on a further beauty, themselves representative models of fresh beginnings. Green London IN SITU features three young artists whose work relates to the architectural and the site specific. Kite & Laslett present Genius Loci, an immersive installation that seeks to capture the spirit of the Belfry through sound and light. Eleanor Wemyss presents Foundations, a series of intricate architectural drawings based on original designs of the building. _____ Kite & Laslett’s Genius Loci draws on sound recordings made in the Church interiors, where improvised acoustic experiments are incorporated into a multi-layered sound piece and projected into the Belfry space. The soundscape is experienced in near-darkness, asking the viewer to contemplate the subtleties of the interaction between the sound composition, light and their relationship to the space with limited navigation. The sounds have been de-contextualised and re-placed, causing disorientation as to their original source, context and their relationship to the Belfry. An example of this can be heard via the spatialised deconstruction and abstraction of Anton Bruckner’s Locus Iste - This Place. The installation is an experiment in kinaesthetic experience, limiting the use of some senses and emphasising the use of others, reconfiguring one’s orientation around the space.
